About
Greetings from Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church! At Grace, our aim is, in the words of one historic statement of faith, “to glorify God and to enjoy him forever”. For this reason, you will find here expository preaching from both the Old and New Testaments that centers on Christ. You will find worship that is both joyful and reverent. You will find a fellowship of believers that is welcoming and encouraging. Our goal as a church is to grow together in the grace and knowledge of the One who has redeemed us from sin and death and has given us eternal life – the Lord Jesus Christ.
We are:
A Bible-believing church
At Grace we believe that the Bible is the Word of God. This means we hold fast to the truths that Scripture teaches: that God created us, that we fell into sin, that Jesus Christ came to save us, and that one day he will return again.
A Reformed church
Our roots run deep. Our heritage traces back to the practice and teaching of the churches of the 16th Century Protestant Reformation. Our confession of faith is the Westminster Standards of the 17th Century: The Westminster Confession of Faith and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms.
A Presbyterian church
“Presbyterian” comes from a Greek word meaning “elder”. Grace is governed by a group of elders, including the minister, whose primary responsibility it is to care for the spiritual well-being of her members.
A church of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC)
The OPC is a nation-wide denomination. The word “orthodox” simply means “straight thinking” or “straight teaching”, and refers to our commitment to the historic Christian faith. To find out more about the OPC, go to www.opc.org
History
Grace OPC’s origins trace back to 1984, when several families joined together to pursue the establishment of a Reformed church in the Mat-Su Valley. Since then, some of the core families have moved out of state, but three of them are still an active part of the congregation.
In 1987, since there was at that time no existing Reformed church in Alaska, the congregation formally affiliated with the Orthodox Presbytery Church (OPC). Today, Grace is a member of the OPC, and part of the regional church under the Presbytery of the Northwest.
Over the years, Grace has been served by several pastors and interim ministers, each of whom made unique contributions to the life and growth of the church. Since 2007, Rev. Scott Johnson has served as the pastor of the congregation.
For a long time, the church had no building and so met in various places, including homes and commercial spaces. In 2005, however, the church was blessed with a newly-constructed building of its own. Not only has the building provided a permanent place for worship and meetings, but it has helped establish the congregation’s place in the wider community.
The history of Grace OPC is just one small part of the far greater story of God’s work in building Christ’s Kingdom on earth. Lord willing, Grace OPC, in her worship and service, will remain true to the “faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 1:3), and will be used by God as a witness to our community both of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and of the riches of the Reformed faith.
